Location
Sønderho is situated on the small island of Fanø, in the North Sea. It takes approximately 12 minutes to sail to Fanø from the mainland (Esbjerg, Jutland)
Sønderho is ideal for recreational purposes.
The area is quite unique:
The beach and the fauna
- The Wadden Sea with its rich bird life (distance from Brinch Hjem: 200 metres).
- The best beach on the North Sea coast (distance from Brinch Hjem: 1.5 km).
The flat, sandy beach is as firm as a tarmac road, and all vehicles can drive right out into the sea. The waves are small near the beach, and they get bigger as the water gets deeper. Armed with patience one may be lucky to find amber.

Preserved heaths and dunes/nature reserves (distance from Brinch Hjem: 200 metres) with an excellent choice of long walks. Many of the routes are also suitable for vehicles.

The fishing village of Sønderho
A small village with thatched houses. Many of the houses are listed and date back to the beginning of the 16th century. The architecture is close and “intimate”. Small, quaint pathways and narrow roads wind their way between the houses. Traffic is limited and slow. One can easily walk about. Even in peak season the pedestrians set the pace, not the cars.

The aqua dome in Nordby
Everyone can have an enjoyable time at the sub-tropical aqua dome, which is open all year round. The air is 31°C and the water 28°C. There is a long slide (40 metres), a spa pool and a wave maker. There are also facilities for the disabled.

Fishing
There are numerous fishing opportunities along the coast. The fairway at Sønderho is especially good for fishing for instance cod, flatfish, eel and mackerel.

Kite flying festival on the beach
The kite flying festival usually takes place around mid-June. Kite enthusiasts from all over the world meet on the wide, sandy beach. There are innumerable kites of all shapes and sizes, and the creativity put into them is outstanding.

Golf
Fanø Golf Links was established in 1901 and is Denmark’s oldest golf course. Playing golf on Fanø Golf Links is a unique experience. The golf course is situated just behind the first range of dunes, and one therefore plays in the midst of the dunes surrounded by lyme grass. Several of the tees are situated on dune tops, offering a magnificent view.
Fanø Golf Links is a unique golf and nature experience and the only links course in Denmark. Link : Fanø golf

Esbjerg "Seal"arium
Esbjerg Sælarium houses many interesting things as well as activities for everyone. The seals can be seen from the edge of the large seal aquarium and through an underwater window. Through a telescope free-living seals can be seen on the sandbanks in the Wadden Sea. There is also a large, magnificent saltwater aquarium.

Gastronomic experiences
There are many restaurants in Sønderho. Sønderho Kro is one of Denmark’s leading gourmet restaurants.
In particular the special lamb from Fanø should be mentioned. It compares favourably with French salted lamb. One should also taste the dried, smoked and fried Fanø fish speciality ”bakskuld”. Fresh fish and shellfish can be bought from the local fishermen and fishmongers.
